In brief
- Cenforce D is an imported generic that pairs 100 mg of sildenafil with 60 mg of dapoxetine in one tablet.
- Each tablet holds both doses at once (100/60 mg); you can choose a box of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180.
- The combined tablet has no UK licence, although each ingredient is licensed separately as a prescription-only medicine.
Cenforce D: two active ingredients in one tablet
Cenforce D brings together two medicines with different jobs. Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor that improves blood flow to the penis in response to sexual stimulation, helping with erectile dysfunction. Dapoxetine, the second ingredient, belongs to the SSRI family but leaves the body quickly; men with premature ejaculation take it because it postpones climax. Neither substance increases desire, and both are meant to be taken only when needed rather than every day.
Cenforce D tablets and their standing in the UK
The tablets offered here contain 100 mg of sildenafil (as citrate) and 60 mg of dapoxetine (as hydrochloride), sold in packs of 30 to 180. They are an imported generic. No product combining these two ingredients is licensed in the UK, and the Cenforce brand does not hold a UK licence. Separately, 100 mg sildenafil tablets (the ingredient of Viagra) and dapoxetine as Priligy 30 mg and 60 mg by Menarini are licensed and classed as POM.
How the separate SmPCs set the doses
For sildenafil, the usual starting dose is 50 mg about an hour before sex, with 100 mg as the maximum, taken no more than once a day. For dapoxetine, the SmPC says treatment begins at 30 mg, taken one to three hours beforehand, and that 60 mg must not be used as a starting dose; it is only considered if the lower dose was well tolerated. Dapoxetine is limited to one dose every 24 hours and is licensed for men aged 18 to 64. A single Cenforce D tablet therefore contains the highest recommended amount of each ingredient. It should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
Heart conditions and fainting risk
The dapoxetine in Cenforce D can cause light-headedness and fainting, sometimes with a slow pulse, and the risk rises with alcohol or dehydration. It is contraindicated in heart failure, conduction problems, significant ischaemic or valve disease, and in anyone with a history of fainting, mania or severe depression. Sildenafil is unsuitable for men advised to avoid sexual activity because of heart disease, after a recent stroke or heart attack, with very low blood pressure, or with loss of sight in one eye from non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy. Moderate or severe liver impairment also rules out dapoxetine.
Medicines that must not be combined
Nitrates and nitric oxide donors, including amyl nitrite, and the drug riociguat must never be taken with sildenafil, as blood pressure may fall dangerously. Because of the dapoxetine component, Cenforce D must not be used with MAO inhibitors, thioridazine, other SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, lithium, linezolid, tryptophan or St John’s wort, nor within 14 days of stopping them. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole and ritonavir are also excluded, and alpha-blockers call for extra caution.
Commonly reported reactions
Headache, dizziness and nausea are the most frequent complaints with dapoxetine, alongside diarrhoea, sleeplessness, tiredness and sweating. Sildenafil commonly causes flushing, indigestion, a blocked nose and changes in colour vision. An erection lasting longer than four hours needs urgent medical help, as does sudden loss of sight or hearing. Whether a combination such as Cenforce D is appropriate at all is a question for the prescriber.
