Prof. John W. Norris
Professor John W. Norris is a distinguished clinical neurologist with a robust career marked by significant contributions to neurology. After graduating from Aberdeen, he completed his postgraduate training in neurology and psychiatry in the UK, supplemented by military service in the Duke of Wellington's regiment. He further specialized at the Montreal Neurological Institute, Canada, before joining the University of Toronto as a clinical professor of neurology.At Toronto, he established one of the world’s first Acute Stroke Units at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in 1975, significantly advancing stroke research and treatment. His innovative research also included studies on cerebral blood flow changes in stroke patients using radioactive isotopes. A key figure in stroke research, Professor Norris founded the Canadian Stroke Consortium, promoting nationwide collaboration. Returning to the UK in 2003 as Emeritus Professor at St George’s Medical School, London, he spearheaded a major study on stroke due to arterial dissection. His scholarly work includes over 211 peer-reviewed publications.
